1 What's the weirdest, most unexpected sample you slipped into the album that nobody has noticed yet - and are you willing to tell us what it is?
Answer: JACKIE AND ONEIDA - TURN OUR RAIN INTO SUNSHINE (1983) was sampled to create "SUNSHINE". Towards the back end of the song, it's like the sun has finally risen and wanted to encompass that feeling.
2 While making this album, did you ever accidentally zone out so hard that you forgot you were supposed to be producing, or is that just the Gateway Experience working as intended?
Answer: Yeah it was easy to zone out. haha. We integrated a CIA sample into most of the songs and the frequencies were pretty jarring. I tried to tune all the beats on the project to a high frequency during the production and mixing.
3 The declassified Gateway Process is a complex subject involving "brain hemisphere synchronization". How did you use instrumentation, samples, and soundscapes to musically represent that specific concept?
Answer: We used panning, pitch, texture, and a specific vocal chain. We used on every song to create our own sound. Nothing else really sounds like it. The outro track really explores that brain hemisphere synchronization concept with slight Flangers on the ethereal sample.
4 You've worked with other heavy hitters like Elcamino and Al.Divino. How did you adapt your production style to Sabio Dub compared to the gritty, street-oriented vibes of a project like Legal Contraband Vol. 1?
Answer: Appreciate that bro. Really it's all the sampling and texture. My beats are very simple and can be made in 5-15 min. A lot of my stuff is just drag and drop. I've kinda got a system in place, if I know I want something ethereal I drag this texture in. If i want a grimy street type sound I drag this sound in. Kinda just have an algorithm at this point. Everything is in FL Studio and anybody could make what I make, it's really the samples that provide the magic.
5 The Serpent Tongue praised the "sonic magic" created on Sabio's previous work. What was a specific moment in the studio where you felt the "sonic magic" happening for this project?
Answer: Before we worked on this project I listened to Sabio Dub's "The Dubtape". It's an incredible album and I highly recommend it. Sabio can produce and mix as well, but by having me produce and mix a project with him it allowed us to create a new sonic magic.
6 Where do you see The Gateway Experience fitting into your overall discography, and what do you hope it says about you as an artist?
Answer: It's an important milestone in the discography. It shows versatility, and is the beginning of many Serpent Tongue curated albums. Shoutout to Corban.
7 What question do you have for Sabio Dub?
Answer: What's next for Big DUBBBB?
Sabio Questions Below
1 The Gateway Concept: The CIA's Gateway Process is about achieving altered states of consciousness. How did you translate that abstract, internal concept into tangible bars and song structures for this album?
Answer: It was about translating the internal feeling into something you can actually hear, using the structure to guide that journey.
2 "Sunshine Rap" Meets the CIA: You've been dupped the "King Of Sunshine Rap". This album's subject matter feels darker and more mysterious. Was it a challenge to merge your warm, smooth sound with the eerie, clandestine vibe of a declassified CIA program?
Answer: Yeah, merging that smooth style and dark vibe was what I wanted to go for. Had to find that balance.
3 You started your career fronting metalcore bands before transitioning to hip-hop. How does that aggressive, heavy music background inform the way you approach the more meditative and atmospheric production on this album?
Answer: Its Mainly understanding rhythm patterns. But I definitely would say I have two sides of me when it comes to my music taste.
4 You recently dropped a massive 20-track project. How did you approach scaling back or focusing your vision for this new album with Dev Rogers? Was it a deliberate change of pace?
Answer: I honestly spend my whole weekend and will do like 3-4 songs and focus and zone into the beats. Also staying medicated as always helps.
5 The underground has embraced you for you unique sound. What do you hope listeners take away from this album after they've listened to it from start to finish?
Answer: This is just a super small taste of what I got to offer. I got a JC Penney holiday type catalogue under my belt I hope people can go back and listen to that classic.
6 If the CIA actually used your album for their training program, what track would make the agents accidentally start dancing instead of astral projecting?
Answer: Definitely the track Mind Haze would cause someone from the CIA to get fired.
7 What is your one question for Dev Rogers?
Answer: My question for Dev is, what do you use to make beats? An MPC SP DAW?
*Thank you both for the interview. The Album is fire. Hope your fans enjoy it like I do on repeat.*
Ceverely Yours,
