Review:
People are on edge when I name a NEW album a classic. But, what is a classic album to you? To me, it's a project that I cannot put down from the first listen. Some people say you have to wait a couple of years, but when I know, I know. The good news is, there is no real formula. You like what you like. You love what you love. And I loved and still love, The Beatnuts Album, "Street Level".
When your think of Hip-Hop in the 90's, especially '94, you think of Nas "Illmatic", The Notorious B.I.G "Ready to Die", Gangstarr "Hard to Earn" or Jeru The Damaja "The Sun Rises in the East". Shout out to DJ Premier for two of those classics. But, did you forget about the Super Producers/Rappers "The Beatnuts"?
Members Juju, Psycho Les, and Kool Fashion aka Al' Tariq started making a buzz with the Native Tongues. The Native Tongues consist of the "Tribe Called Quest", "Jungle Brothers" and "De La Soul. Actually, the Jungle Brothers renamed The Beat Kings to the Beatnuts. They always believed the group had excessive personality and they use to carry 100's of records to every DJ show, no matter what.
Prior to this album, they released "Intoxicated Demons EP with 11 tracks with hits like, "Reign of the Tec:" "When I pop the trunk, hit the deck!" followed by "John Wayne couldn't even stand the reign of the tec!" They were dropping hits from the jump. And their EP is longer than artist actual LP's nowadays. Thank you Kanye. LOL!
After this LP the group member Fashion found and studied Muslim culture and changed his name to Al' Tariq and went solo. The group didn't put out another disc until '97's "Stone Crazy". This group still went on to make various hits and make an impact in Hip-Hop. Check out 1999 "A Musical Massacre" and 2001 "Take It Or Squeeze It". Also, their 1997 EP "Do You Believe? EP" along with the rest of their work.
This album cover was influenced by the cover of Hank Mobley's The Turnaround. The album also only had one track from from their debut EP, "Psycho Dwarf" make this album. Features include Grand Puba, Miss Jones and DJ Sinister amongst others. Their top singles were, "Props Over Here" and "Hit Me with That," but the entire album was pouring with singles.
This is an album that I still listen too and tell others about. It has to go down in Hip-Hop History as one of the best. Each track had me wondering if these artist were Gods. The lyrical content was entertaining, humorous and clever. The music is over the top incredible sonic-ally. It fuses Jazz, Boom Bap and Funk that Hip-Hop wasn't really messing with. There are NO stale moments. The production is equal to Premo and Dr. Dre and the lyrical content competed with the best groups back in the day and to this day. Some say, this isn't the only #hiphopclassic in their discography. I'll throw "A Musical Massacre" on the table for debate. What do you think?
At the end of the day, I believe this is a classic project. Please respect my platform and comment below for good conversation. Thanks in advance.
