Review:
I asked the young uptown,Kingston Jamaican born brethren a couple of questions. I figured we can get to know the gentleman before I critique his music. It's only fare. Last year he released two EP's and this year, this is the first.
Why do you do what you do?
- I was always into music since High school. My cousins used to run a studio called Gambling House which many would consider as the mecca of hip hop in Kingston Jamaica. Being around that helped me hone my craft and develop my skills over the years for sure.
How do you work?
- I got a little set up in my apartment. I got used to recording myself for a while now. I work at my own pace. No rush. I just let the music come to me. Sometimes I record as soon as I write.. sometimes I wait a while. I guess it depends on the type of project.
What's your background?
- I was born in America and moved to Jamaica when I was around 5 years old. I grew up in Kingston St. Andrew. Raised by a very close knit family who had humble beginnings before my time. I grew up in a more privileged area of Kingston, 5 minutes away from the side that you may see on TV.
What's integral to the work of an artist?
- I think artists should aim to leave a legacy when it's all said and done. The journey to be great is what we should give access to fans and supporters.
What role does the artist have in society?
- I always felt like the artists role is just to create music and a lot of times it may reflect reality, whether good or bad. We talk about the things we see around us or what we personally have gone through. Most people think the artist should be a role model and someone to look up to. Is it fair to the artist? I'm not so sure about that.
What has been a seminal experience?
- Putting on shows and giving a platform to the local hip hop community in Kingston Ja while I lived there. That was a seminal experience for me and my crew The Council. Not just because of the fact we found a way to keep it going out of pocket for years. But you learn that you won't be able to please everybody.
How has your craft change over time?
- I've grown in my music overtime. Life causes that. And as time goes on I figure out my sound and what I feel works best with my style and what my supporters want to hear from me. and I work wid it.
Let me first say that I'd like to thank Nomad Carlos for actually answering my questions. I hope through my questions, we all know the artist a bit more than yesterday. And if you've already heard the project, share it with your friends and family.
The first single "Slice Em" hits you 1980's movie villain style beat with the actual cartoon-ish villain voice on the intro and chorus. I can see the video already Mr. Carlos if your reading this. Maybe like in a video game like setting, you are doing the "Save Your Loved Ones" scenario. Maybe you tracking the BAD GUY to his lair.
The second single, "Psyche Gauge" you hear the Jamaican accent deeply and Nomad let's you into a bit of his psyche gauge. I'm really enjoying the sounds of this record. Again, it sounds like I see the visuals for the video already. Scene one, Mr. Carlos is in a straight graffiti straight jacket and he's plans to escape from the ward, but there's a twist. I may be sounding insane to you currently, but all I'm saying is, this artist music is so visual. It takes more that putting some words on a page to accomplish this as an artist.
Nomad keeps your attention throughout the project with tales from his life growing up in Kingston and NYC. The combination of the two brings complete character to this project.
I couldn't find too much about the producer, "The Artivist", but I did see that he's only 20. So this new producer has some heat on this EP and the connection is smooth. These beats blend nicely with the artist. I hope to see them link with more work in the future.
The features included MC's Five Steez on, "Persophone" which is a standout cut for me. I like the dynamic between the MC's and they really bring the tempo up to the boom bap error on this song. And then on "Impulsive Warrior" with MC BadFX goes bar for bar with Mr. Carlos on a smooth melodic beat. This is a great song as well.
All and all, this is a solid project. I'd recommend this along with his previous works from the artist called, "Cipher" and "The Nomad Carlos Project". So, Nomad Carlos, if your reading and watching my YouTube Video below, I'd like to say thanks for the good music. I hear your passion and love for the music and look forward to more projects. Thanks in Advance.
