Review:
I have the cheat sheet when it comes to this artist. We are actually related, but he's not getting special treatment on this REVIEW. Matter of fact, I'm going harder on my critique. We've been actually respectfully speaking on what tracks are dope and which one's will make his DEBUT PROJECT.
So, I was hearing joints prior to everyone of course. And the first thing I noticed is, Mr. Malik did not include TWO of his summer hits on this project. He has a single called, "Big Dog" that is FIRE. And then his other single called, "Young Plans" that didn't make the cut either. Either way, check out those additional singles on all music platforms. He may release them on his 2nd Summer Project. Keep your ears open for that.
I'm going to start off with a track that went from a rotation song for me, to just a good song. On "Where I'm From" (Boston Anthem) I was so into the beat and his flow until it came to the chorus. You know I asked him who's singing on the track right? He told me, "It's a friend of his and he doesn't want his name out there." Well, well, well! I wonder why? I asked him to get a more confident singer on the hook, because this could be a Boston Anthem. Just change the hook and put out a REMIX later and put one or two other Boston artist on it. If that does happen, I'll keep y'all informed.
On the intro he has a friend that kills the pimpish vibe that introduces the young emcee. It was entertaining and when he got to the rapping, it was dope they way it was blended. Kudos to keeping my interest Rufus Mo' Douglas III. Some projects be having 5 minute intros without rhyming yet. I'm like, I don't mind you being creative, but can I hear some work. LOL!
Then on "Black Poetry" he goes in on the too short, but FIRE BEAT lyrically with a brief smooth flow. Now, this is how you start a album.
On "Hate Yourself" another one of my rotation tracks, Tajh goes in on the MIC. He's making sure people respect his word play along with his beat selection. Great smooth groove that fits the criteria of what he's speaking of. This Boston MC, spits, "Just remember Geppetto gave Pinocchio his nose/Snakes gone be snakes like Nokia's the phone. I'm a KING keep it real and there's no lending the thrown/If I care 'bout how you feel won't have peace of mine at home...YAH."
And then on the Bonus Track, "Black Royalty" he highlights the title of the album with, "Before the came in blazing, we were self-enslaving For power and respect they best believe we take it. It was tribe against tribe was no type of friendship making naw...."
This young STAR has something to share, teach and learn. This release has me wanting more.
I've already heard a couple of more joints from the new project, so get ready. This lyricist is out for your TOP 25 MC'S list. And if he keeps this pace, he'll get there and more. The good news is, he's putting out quality and not quantity work. He still has room for growth, but that's common sense. Don't ALL MC's get better? He has to experience life lessons and eventually, those BARS will elevate.
Overall I'm giving this LP 3.68 MICS. The majority of the tracks are head nodding or smooth. He's a NEW artist in the game and I believe his word play will develop and become stronger. He's already at a 3.5 for Lyricist. And the album vibe is nothing but Hip-Hop in it's own. So, Tajh Malik and camp, if your reading and watching the YouTube below, great job on your DEBUT album. Can't wait to see you on stage performing and most importantly as a family member.
