Review:
Hip-Hop knows who MC Eiht is, but do they know he use to be in a group called CMW? Compton's Most Wanted consisted of MC Eiht, Tha Chill, DJ Unknown and DJ Slip. Eiht and Chill were the rappers and of course Unknown and Slip were the DJ's/Producers. They also own record labels back then. To my knowledge, DJ Unknown own Techno Hop Records. And Slip owned the biggest DJ renting company back then. Unknown brought a mix-tape of Eiht and Chill to Slip and the magic was born.
This group fell under the radar on most platforms back in the day. They would of never formed a group if it wasn't for their (Eiht & Chill) good friend MC Ren, who started making noise with a little group called N.W.A. Eiht and Chill started making underground mix-tapes or hood tapes and stopped allegedly gang banging. When they started circulating around the neighborhood, the music got in the right hands.
The album is labelled Explicit, but it was for the only the content of gangsta rap. The group never swore in one song. They actually beeped out swears and silence them during the entire record. Even without swears, this album is more HOOD than albums now. I cannot find why they never swore. If you know, please let me know. Was it a record label thing? Did the artist choose not too? And while I'm asking questions, did Eiht write this entire album?
I read somewhere MC Eiht even wrote Tha Chill's rhymes on this album. I need someone to verify this. I was aware that The Chill got locked up for Joy Riding so he couldn't complete the album. That's why you here more of MC Eiht. Chill continued this pattern of going to jail and not completing the next two albums as well. This is why MC Eiht became a solo artist.
Every time I write Eiht, I want to add the "G". And the reason I mention this is because, if you remember, Eiht and DJ Quik use to have real beef. Like I'm going to kill you beef. But, they took there beef on wax and every time I think of the wrong way of the spelling of Eight, I think of one of DJ Quik's verses. Not verbatim, but it was something like, "You left out the "G", because the "G" ain't in you." That was a hard bar. Sorry Eiht, it's just a part of hip-hop.
Let's get back to this album. The production seemed like a smooth 70's style mixed with worshiping the sounds of EPMD. It was smooth and melodic. Beats that you take those long showoff trips with your boys. Like Will Smith says, "Drive 2 miles an hour, so everyone see's you." The production is baby butt smooth. And if some of the tracks didn't have DJ cuts in them, you wouldn't know it was an older album. The album is timeless in my book from the roota to the toota.
