Review:
Even though they were in a group prior, this album surprised me. I really didn't know how much good friends they are. Joell and KXNG met the year they both won XXL's Freshmen of the Year Award. Mr. Ortiz signed with Dr. Dre and Mr. Crooked signed with Death Row Records. Back then you couldn't ask for two of the best labels. Success was automatic right?
Well if you ask Mainstream hip-hop fans, they may not know who these gentleman are. But if you ask the underground and lyrical content fans, they will scream legends. These two are unbelievable as solo artist and this project just doubles the possibilities of a lyrical bash. The title of this project is so appropriate. H.A.R.D. stands for Housing Authority Rap District. Great acronym for two of the hardest MCS to date.
Joell Ortiz parents were born in Puerto Rico and he was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 6, 1980. He reps his people and he's one of the dopest MC's on this planet. He was once signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment record label. He was featured in the Unsigned Hype in the classic The Source Magazine in 2004. He's also won in 2004 EA Sports with his song "Mean Business" soundtrack for NBA Live 2005. People believe he was black balled because he had some miscommunication with LEGEND Jermaine Dupri, but who really knows. I've always been a fan of his clever, witty, humorous rhyme patterns. Ortiz wasn't acknowledge again mostly until he joined the SUPERGROUP Slaughterhouse in 2011 through Eminem's record label.
Stage name originally "Crooked I", now KXNG Crooked, Dominick Antron Wickliffe (Real Name) at seventeen started a record company called Muscle Records. This lead him to his first record deal with Noo Trybe/Virgin Records in 1995. Noo Trybe/Virgin trashed there urban division and Mr. Crooked struggled for a while until he worked out a deal with DPG Records/Death Row Records as a solo artist deal. His biggest views for Hip-Hop was with the supergroup SLAUGHTERHOUSE as well with other MC's, Royce Da 5'9, Joe Budden and Joell.
Even though they can do an ACAPELLA album and it be Dope, they reached out to some of the BEST producers/DJ's in the business. Let's start off with that Erick Sermon and Boogeyman's beat. I'm claiming this the BEST beat on the album. Mr. Sermon is a legend as a beat maker, DJ and MC. This GOAT is always putting his best foot forward. And it's, "STRICTLY BUSINESS" when the partner of the legendary EPMD drops that beat for MC's of this caliber.
The infamous Beatmakerz make an appearance on three tracks out of eight. And why not? These producers have been delivering incredible music within the past three years straight. Jim Jones "El Capo" all done by Beatmakerz. #Hiphopclassic. Fred the Godson "God Level" all done by the Beatmakerz. #Hiphopclassic. #RipFredTheGodson #FuckCorona
Illmind did TWO tracks, J.U.S.T.I.C.E League one and Apollo Brown the other. This album just gave us HARD BEATS and HARD RHYMES. Shout out to all the Heavy Weight producers.
With only eight tracks, you find yourself looking for the other half of the album. But at the same time, with the album being so lyrical, I'm still finding things they BOTH said and rewinding those WORDS.
So KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz if your reading or listening to me RATE on YouTube, I'd like to THANK YOU for this project. I'd like to thank you for sharing your word play, intelligence and immaculate love for HIP-HOP. MUCH APPRECIATED!
I'm giving this album 4.67 MICS. I'd like to recommend they do the next album with just the Heatmakerz, Erick Sermon, 38Spesh or their brother Royce. Some of these beats didn't hit, but the lyrics saved the songs. And let's admit people, the production matters. And sometimes these lyrical KXNGS & QUXXNS pick bad beats. So be like Lebron and take your talent to the most talented beat creators please. Thanks in advance.
